Behnam Dezfouli (computer engineering) has a new journal paper with master’s student Immanuel Amirtharaj and Ph.D. student Chelsey Li, “EMPIOT: An Energy Measurement Platform for Wireless IoT Devices,” accepted for publication by Elsevier’s Journal of Network and Computer Applications.
Silvia Figueira (computer engineering, Frugal Innovation Hub) will be in two panels at the International Conference on Sustainable Development (ICSD 2018), Columbia University, New York, this week. She will also be a panelist in the Ignatian Center’s “Tech in the Service of Displaced People,” a discussion exploring how technological innovation, including blockchain and mobile devices, can help migrants, internally displaced people, and refugees navigate the obstacles they face on a daily basis. Amin Ghafooripour (civil, environmental, and sustainable engineering) was the speaker and organizer of the symposium, Seismic Design of Nonstructural Components, in Oakland, CA, Sept. 20. In his presentation, he discussed the dynamics of the secondary structure in conjunction with primary structure during an earthquake, the philosophy of the “R” factor for the nonstructural component design, and the differences between ASCE7-10 and 16. This symposium was a joint work of industry, professional societies (ASCE/SEI) and SCU.

Their hard work paid off and the BASIS Independent Silicon Valley VEX Robotics Team received the STEM Research Project Award (VIQC). This amazing win qualifies our bobcat for the 2017 VEX Worlds – VEX IQ Challenge Middle School Division.
